Smile 5 inch wider Bear Mountain Bridge

I have been enjoying my DIY Bridge and tweaking it every day for a while now, but I finally altered my JRB Bear Mountain Bridge to be as wide as my DIY. I actually like it better than mine now since it is as wide, lighter than mine and narrower in the center than mine; it's easier to get out of by far.
What i did was cut the end caps and open them by about 8 inches at the top and sewed Omni around the hemmed edges. I intend to make a bugnet insert and a DWR insert for the ends. It is so much more open and there is no shoulder squeeze at all.
I will post pictures on this thread tomorrow of the hammock hanging with me in it. Sorry about that, don't have another model that will get their picture taken.... mule

    cut away

good job Mule. This works out, and I 'spect it will, you'll be showing the way to a bunch of folks who'd be interested in a BMBH except for the report shoulder squeeze thing.

You might have to hang out your shingle though and shop this mod out, 'tis a scary thought to cut into a couple hundred dollars worth of hammock!

I know what you mean, Grizz, so I sterilized my scizzers and wore a mask....Ha! It seems plenty strong, and I do like the deeper parabolic on the BMB. Soon I will be making mine and by that time I will have tested this thoroughly. Mule

Really nice mod. You are braver than me. I like the bugnet insert idea. That way you can peek out the ends and see whos coming, and if they have a big knife.

The hanging 35 inch wide BMB

Some Pictures of my mod to the BMB. I made inserts to go in the end caps where I cut a slit to allow it to be wider using 35 inch spreader bars. Take a look at more pictures of it in my posted pictures.

I could post the instructions for this mod. Right now I am making two bridge hammocks that will be 35 inches wide.
This mod is not really that hard to do, but it may be hard to gather all the stuff...that's the hardest part.
The spreader bars and black Omni would be the main things. One you have these, just mark the center of the end caps and cut down to within 2 inches of the body of the hammock.
Roll and sew a narrow hem.
Then hang the hammock with the new bars, take some Omni and put it across the gap on both ends.
Then sew the Omni to the hammock where it is attached. Leave it loose enough to get the bars off and on.
Then edge the Vee (triangle) made by the split with more Omni. Rehang the hammock and cut a template to the size and shape of the insert you will need.
Cut the bugnet over size by two inches everywhere, roll and hem a 1" hem. Add Omni, or pin it and put it on the ends.
When it's right, sew the Omni in place. Put Omni on both sides of the top part of the triangle insert so that when you have it stuck in place, the bugnet will still have Omni to grip.
Well, then you will have to add a six inch strip of bugnet to the center of yours, fill it in with Omni over the inserted area.
    That's about it. Mule
