    Are Hammocks Comfortable?

Don't kill me! It's not what you think! This is the second in a series of articles I'm writing looking at hammocks in a different way.

Of course hammocks are comfortable, but I think most of us have experienced a few challenges to achieve that comfort. Check my post to see what my list contains, and I'm curious to read about yours.

I can't think of anything immediately that you missed. You have most all the bases covered on this one. I think it's also good to know that just because something works great for everyone else (end whipping styles for example) it may not even remotely work for you. Getting into hammocks has a pretty steep learning curve but it's fun and very rewarding. For more personally it took over a year to get it just right.

Good work and as always the illustrations are superb.

Did you mention anything about leg cushions?

What about Pads in hammocks? Some people like them, others find them quite uncomfortable.

Leg hyperextension perhaps needs to be explained- It's like when you put your leg on the coffee table but it's too high, and your knee bends backwards slightly. This can also happen in hammocks.

    Great articles dejoha!

All I have to say is that a bad night in a hammock is still better than a good night on the ground.

Hmmm.... I ought to make bumper stickers for that one!

I have to admit I have a much better time just laying in a hammock on a warm sunny afternoon on a ledge over looking the lake and reading a book,
every now and then dozing off for an hour or so.

    Another well written article dejoha!

Claustrophobia is the one I keep trying to get my buddy to overcome. He looks at my simple gathered-end hammocks and doesn't think of them as sufficient enough, and calls my netted ones "coffins". He then gets on his hands and knees and shuffles into his little one-man. Hey, he's Sleeping His Own Sleep...

Concerning two man hammocks, it does appear Clark has a new (1 or 2 person) hammock out called the Flex 180. 4 lb 6 oz, versus the 5 lb 10 oz Vertex. If some of this weight could be distributed among two backpackers it appears to be an interesting option for couples. It looks so new there isn't a great deal of information on it.
Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose.

So true. I started with a very simple hammock that I bought at an outdoor expo on a whim (Trek Light double). Once I got more into hammocking, I tried several other very popular brands and styles, but never could get the comfort of my trusty old TL. Sometimes it takes some trial and error to find the right fit? I did learn that a hammock with an integrated bug net made me claustrophobic.
You might want to talk about suspension systems, and being aware of strap stretch with nylon straps. I ended up almost on the ground before I learned these lessons.

Interesting read, nothing jumped out at me other than to look up how you taught folks to get in.
