    Rain & suspension

When taking down my HH Exped after the first test hang in the rain I noticed the ropes had absorbed quite a bit of moisture though the hammock itself had stayed dry. In a real soaking rain is there a danger water will run down the ropes and eventually start wetting the hammock and if so is there a good way to prevent this? I do have snakeskins and am thinking using them to cover as much as possible will help. My tarp is hung on a separate ridgeline.

I dealt with about 2.5 days of solid rain in NC a couple of years ago. My drip lines did their jobs and I never had any problems.

I made a couple of drip strings out of a thinly cut piece of shamwow. It works great. Just make sure you tie it to your suspension at a place where it is under your tarp.

Sounds like a plan. How long did you make your drip strings?

I don't think they need to be longer than about 10 inches. I cut them pretty thin, with the top end slightly thicker. I then cut a small slit in the top end and larks headed the pieces to the suspension. It works great. Plus, they are orange and act as a little flag to make sure I don't run into the suspension.

Dunno anything about HH suspension, but I would ditch any rope that absorbed moisture, in favor of something like Amsteel or Dynaglide. For those single braids, take a piece of mason twine, put an overhand knot in the middle, and bury the knot in the suspension. Voila! Drip strings!

    Agreed!

I may always be a proponent of the "All-in-one" whoopie sling system from whoopieslings.com it may be a bit pricey for some but I find it to be the perfect suspension solution; drip rings and all.
