Just finished my version and love the lay! Do have some changes to make. Started with 3/4"x 10" dowels with grooves 1" in from the ends. Sewed channels in my fulltimer and ran 7/64 amsteel thru the channels, clove hitched the amsteel in the grooves, joined the amsteel and finished with a whoopie. Found that 4"or 6" between the grooves will be enough and my amsteel with whoopies is too long for my house stand. The change in the lay makes this worth while.

I've spent considerable time the last couple of days thinking about a better way to attach the amsteel to the spreader bar. I kept making it too complicated.

I'll try the clove hitches soon...Thanks!

Looks good OD, thats some stand you have there. Thanks for the update, the clove hitch is prolly the way to go, I just like to make things more difficult than they need to be.
    Good luck,

I avoided running the amsteel through the holes altogether. I clove hitched the amsteel on the ends of 6" wooden dowels. I ran some copper wire through the holes and bent loops on each of end of the wire to make a kind of cotter pin. This keeps the amsteel clove hitches from slipping down to the middle of the dowels. I haven't seen and don't expect any wear on the amsteel with this set up.

I really like the effect of Red's mini-spreader bars on the hammock!

I clove hitched my amsteel too but the Olddog's grooves are more elegant than my cotter pins. We both agree that the effect of Red's mini-spreader bars is terrific!

You're my source for the clove hitch idea Pip's. Thank you and thank you Red for coming up with this fantastic solution for a common inconvenience in a gathered hammock. Will be working on changes but still going to use it tonight even though the hammock is just off of the floor. At least if there's a failure in the workmanship the fall will be minimal.

I noticed that! Olddog is always ahead of his time

If you folks keep talking about how comfortable this mod is, I'm going to have to add it to my hammock, but "adding" is not what a gram weenie is supposed to do!

Sorry about the dates, grabbed my wifes camera and didn't even notice. Pics were taken 6/28/12. Spent last night with these longer spreaders and sleep even better than before. No chance to shorten the dowels today with honey-do's for my mother and these 2 G-daughters who are spending the summer with us. Will have to get the changes made soon. Getting out of a hammock that's only a few inches off the floor is hard on an old man.

Olddog: Can you hang your hammock like this:

    Screen shot 2012-06-29 at 7.40.27 AM.png

to get it higher off the ground?

How did you make your grooves? With a lathe?
