Mini-spreader bar on End Channel Hammock

Since this mod adds some weight, length, and bulk to a hammock, I'm wondering if modding both ends of the hammock is required to reap the benefits, or if just putting a mini-spreader on the foot end is sufficient.

I tried the mod with only one side modified and did not notice a big difference from the gathered end (I switched back and forth as to which way I was facing). But it could have just been my hammock (DIY GT Nano (4'x9')).

Food for thought:
I keep kicking this one around in my head, and really like the idea and just completed a DIY build (here). My biggest open question is how to add a spreader bar to a gathered end netted hammock and close up the holes at the end.

Although I didn't add it I last hypotheses was a horse collar design with a tab on the outside to keep the top net tight. I also thought about sewing the top netting directly to the channel.

Good think I have more material to play this one out.

My SwitchBack hammock from TTTG has the net sewn into the end channel. That design requires pick-up points with lines attached the ends of your tarp to take up the extra slack. It makes for a spacious bugnet which is one of the things folks like about SwitchBacks.

Darn Darn Darn it! I've been avoiding looking at this thread for weeks but the mention it keeps getting in other threads has forced my hand.



It's a beautifully simple idea, Red and the mods have been elegant. I have absolutely no need for this as I'm perfectly comfortable in my current hammocks, but I just cant stand the pressure!!!

Has anyone tried to attach a bar in the same manner as a bridge hammock. Seems like everyone is trying to re invent the wheel. This video by opie shows what I mean. By the way I am 99% sure the hammock in the video is the hammock I have now. I dont know where he got his end pieces but I am sure something similar to what the Jacks use would work in this application as well. Just found and read this entire thread today thanks to Pipps. Thanks Pipps. Now I am going to have to try this. Now that I think of it you should be able to simulate this bar with a piece of dowel and a redneck lathe. Hmmmm.

Thats pretty slick RePete, the challenge (for me anyway) is to keep the suspension reasonably short, which is hard to do with burys everywhere, but this gives me some ideas. Thanks.

We have a winner. Or at least, I like it.

I took newhanger's idea, massaged it a bit, and here is the result.

I started with 48" of Amsteel. The holes in the pvc are 3.75" on centers, and the oal of the bar is 5.75". After passing the Amsteel through the holes, I made two whoopies, sized them to fit the pvc snugly, stitched them, and cut/buried the tails.

This design gives more spread and less arc than others I've tried...zero calf ridge.

I like it OG, I too wonder if you could get away with just one bar, I like the symmetry of two bars, but if it truly didn't make a difference I could live without the symmetry

I think the narrower/shorter hammocks wont benefit, at least not enough to make a difference.

Gotta disagree...my GTUL is a whole 'nother critter with the mod.

This makes sense. In effect you're lengthening the body of the hammock.

I'm going to try it on one of my shorter ones.
