The picture looks good to me, and great find!
    Have you tried it yet?
Have you also tried spreader bars as a comparison?
This carabiner seems like the easiest most convenient method for sure.
There is a REI near me and I am interested in learning which carabiner it is as they have lots of them

    Thanks,

    Peter

Pay no attention to TBCTX. Every time I'm around him he costs me money.

Seriously, he comes up with great solutions and this biner idea ranks right there with his work on the single line suspension. Top notch.

Although I've never tested mini spreader bars, I tried out Tim's rig and found myself more comfortable in his GTUL than I have ever been in mine. Now I need to go pick up some biners.

Truthfully though, whatever the cost of the hardware, it will save me the time and frustration of multiple attempts at DIY which is not my strong suit.

It seems to provide all of the benefits of the spreader bar with alot less length and none of the annoyance of getting the spreader bar into the bag, but more cost. From comments I'm pretty sure its a locking belay biner or such. If this worked right the picture is attached.
So I replaced the straps in my DN with amstell and a ring, now I get to take that out and use a Carabiner. Yup, this hammocking is a bit costly, but sure is fun though
Pretty soon I will be making a table cloth hammock, double thickness so as to add UQ.

Yes, we set up me and old gringo's GTULs not 5ft apart, mine with biners his with spreader bars... he has biners on order, should tell you something. He is seeing if a set of cheaper belay biner will indeed work (mine are petzl attache or such the cheaper ones the expensive "lighter" ones have cutouts that do us nothing), he saw some other ones that seem to be same shape/size that were about half the price. My post here was also due to him bugging me about posting a pic here in pm.

+1 HomeMadeHiker! Perhaps something like these biners; but with a wider arc?

Still... the name may be problematic as I'm not sure it would even be legal to buy a "Dutch Spreader" tee hee hee
Oh wait! If its Dutch then we'll have to split the cost !

These things work. The comfort is there, the hammock hangs straight, and there is no fiddle factor. I'm pretty sure these biners are the ones Tim has:

Btw, Tim was not "bugged"; I'm capable of much better work than that.

I have been wrapped up in the carabiner mod for a couple of days now, looking for larger biners than the standard climbing harness, but skoalbandit's post kept coming back to mind. Not having time to pick up any bias tape, gros grain or whatever with my work schedule, I turned to every little stagehand's friend-cable ties. Great results, best spread and flattest lay so far. First pic is pre mod(6" dowel, grooves 3/4" in from ends), 2nd is post mod with my weight in hammock. Thanks, skoalbandit!
