There does not seem to be a very practical way to install one of these for backpacking, I do use one in the house and in the back yard but ultimately it turns out to be not very trail friendly.
    Good luck,

Notice that the spreader bar allows the middle of the hammock to sag further, and sets the edges to be higher.

Because of the bulk of carrying the PVC tubes or setting it up or ?

Has anyone ended up trying drilling a hole in MSR Ground Hog Stake and using that as a spreader bar? What about using 4 knotbones to keep the bar from sliding?

I'm also considering sewing 2' of additional material to a 10' hammock and possibly trying to make a foot box

I've noticed a significant difference between directly larksheading the whoopie through my hammock channel ends as opposed to using a small loop of 1" cargo straps...
You can see the whoopie sling larksheaded to the loop ends in one, and in another, a short length of webbing to a cam buckle (old set up)
The effect is basically to bunch the fabric up, but evenly and have some space/V shape..it is more comfortable this way than when I did the direct whoopie sling attachment...the hammock is 103-104" long after channel sewn.. (made out of 3 yards of heavy fabric)

the 1" webbing used is fairly thick and stiff, so it doesn't deform as much as lighter webbing would.

Get some silicone tubing like used on exercise bands and run the amsteel through that.
IE the silicone tubing goes in the channel. Keeps the cloth from bunching up and you can adjust the cloth on the tube however you want.

    better view of the webbing loops through the channel with whoopie sling attached;

No calf ridge in this set up as far as I know, ridge line is fixed length, around 86" or so

did you try it? I wonder if they sell those tubings by themselves. Sounds like it would work (provided the silicone tubing is stiff and sticky enough)

    Probably sell silicone tubing somewhere.

Yes I did try it and it controls the fabric bunching at the end.
I also tried clear flexible tubing PVC tubing from Home Depot and that also works pretty well but not as grippy.

Mini-spreader bar on End Channel Hammock

I just finished Building another Hammock thisa one is 3.5 yds long and I think it is the best one yet to date. I put a 1 inch former ladder rung from my sons swing set and drilled holes 7' apart with an inch or so beyond that and put 2 amsteel dog bones through the channel and larks headed them to the rung. This set up has no stress spots at all and lays so flat it is unreal.. I just bought more amsteel and 15 yds of 2nds fabric from Oware today so I will be making a few more of these in the near future. I should be able to pack this up by just rolling it up and putting in the stuff sack. The next one I will try a 10" spread.

Very interesting URZED. I've got some 90 inch wide material coming next week to try some new ideas. Also looking for the elusive flat lay. Please keep us informed on your testing. Thanks!
