Thank you G.L.P.
Yeah, when I was out testing in the trees I didn't have any line with me to tie any knots, and when I was testing at home a knot in the line was the most expedient solution, but I'm sure there is something out there that would work.
Yes, you are correct on the order of the PVC, they're not glued, they're under compression so no worries, plus they're a pretty tight fit in the first place.
No worries on the pvc breaking, its under compression so should have no problem, but I'm not an engineer, I just stayed in a holiday in express last night.
I believe you are correct sir.
Good luck,

You can and maybe should attach the structural ridge line to the the rings instead of the PVC. Just make the ridge-line longer by about 5/6 of the added length.
excellent idea.dang it another must try idea!i have allways been a channel guy,and recently have been toying with a new idea, but could not quite figure how to get what i wanted.i think this was the missing peice.
diyin to hang
I might give that a shot, but I have to believe pulling on the pvc helps keep it close to the hammock where I want it. But I'll try it off the rings and see what happens.
Thanks LT. I'd love to have someone else try this and see if its working for them, sort of a proof of concept if you will. To me it was noticeably different, I'd like to hear someone else's experience.
Good luck,

Nice work Red.
I "think" if you put the spreader in the channel, it wouldn't allow for the same arc that the cord provides??
Maybe a curved spreader?
Did you do both ends of the hammock, or just the foot end?
Thats a good looking green fabric! Where'd ya get it?
I suggested moving the ridge line attachment to the rings only so there would be no bending load on the PVC.
Thanks Randy. I have a bar on both ends of the hammock. I was thinking of a curved bar also, or maybe after you thread the amsteel thru the channel you could hand sew the corners of the fabric to the amsteel a couple inches either side of center, that would at least pull the edges tighter? Maybe? But I think the bar provides a gentler curve. The hammock channel under the spreader bar assumes a nice shallow catenary when under a load.
The fabric is polyester I got from Wally World, I think its liner material for a suit or jacket etc.
Good luck,

Great idea! I played around with a similar idea several months ago on my claytor no net. It really does help! I did something different for the ridge line---just a simple continuous loop in a prussic knot around the whoopie sling end, with the ridge line attatched to the loop. (that way you can adjust the ridgeline up or down on the whoopie is needed. ) I thought your idea was pretty creative though! I was using a piece of wood for a spreader--I think the pvc idea is brilliant!
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.
