I agree. It seems as though it may have taken a step backwards. Did the center ridge reappear?

The difference between this and the trad. is that the srl pulls on the apex of the suspension arc, and also doesn't cause the hammock to bunch in the middle. It still does bunch in the middle but not because of the srl. Part of my problem is I don't have proper testing facilities, I need a turtledog stand or something so my hang is identical everytime. I don't have trees in my yard so I can't always do an overnight test. I do think its better than trad. endchannel and comparable to MSB.

Calf ridge isn't really back. Its one of those things where you're straining so hard to feel the difference, you're not sure if there is one. Still requires more testing.
    Good luck,

I think all these techniques are accomplishing the same thing in different ways. That is, they create a bit of slack in the center of the hammock, making the centerline longer than the edges.

To add another technique toward that same objective, I cut only the foot end on a parabolic arc with a 3" belly such that the centerline is 3" longer than the edges. Then, I finish with a Warbonnet "whipping." (Which I find easiest to sew.) The ridge goes away!

Then I inserted the MSB and gave it a go, felt pretty good, good as anything I guess. Then just for S&G's I removed the MSB and just hung like that. I did adjust the suspension to account for the greater OAL w/o the bars but I did not adjust the SRL as that dimension had not changed. To my surprise I couldn't really tell a difference between having the bar in or out with the SRL connected to the center of the suspension?
So if anyone else is feeling a little froggy and doesn't mind melting a small hole in their channel I'd be keen to hear your results. I just made my wife a new tablecloth hammock and had I thought of this before I'd have put a button hole in the channel for the SRL but I'll prolly just melt a hole in it and not worry about it. I probably have 10 holes melted in my channel for other bad ideas I've tried and they have had no adverse affect on the hammock just in case you're wondering. I also tried the asym srl just by pushing the hammock and srl over to opposite corners when the bar was installed that actually seemed to make a better lay. It needs more testing but ATM for hiking I'd drop the MSB and splice a continuous loop into the end channel with SRL larks headed to the loop thru a hole in the center of the channel. Here are some pix to help with my explanation.

I'm really interested to see if this works the same for anyone else. seems like a simplified way to get some of the same effects as the MSB. might be willing to try myself.
I really need to get another hammock so I don't feel the need to test things on my "main" hammock

    5/8" oak dowel for 12", 3/4 for 24"

This is all just experimental. I have gone back to the 12" for now, but am more interested in building a bridge hammock.

    Here is my experiment.
1" PVC inside the channels of a 10 foot, 60" wide DIY hammock.
There was still a bit of slippage, but minimal, after I looped the strap through the PVC again.
My 6'3" son, Brett, and our dog said it was comfortable - maybe a bit more roomy feeling with the spreader bars.

    ?

Is there a considerable difference of tension on the hem of the hammocks channel with the spreader compared to classic gathered?

Should I run more lines through the hem?

No there doesn't seem to be any additional strain on the hammock. Mine is just sewn with reg. poly thread and the end channel shows no signs of strain.
