    Hot Knife?

    Hey team,

Anybody ever tried a 'Bernzomatic' torch with hot knife blade on rip-stop, syl-nylon, M90, or other synthetics? I saw one today at home depot and it really got me to thinking about just what the possibilities are.

    thanks,
    Ish

Are you talking about the mini torch? I don't have that specific model but i have a Weller butane soldering iron kit and the hot knife attachment for that works like a champ on rip-stop. It looks comparible to the mini-torch, just different grip. I also use mine for Nylon or poly strap cutting.

sounds like the same concept. butane fuel source. the knife blade is about 1/4" wide by 1" long and maybe 1/32" thick. sound familiar?

i'll probably get one because the price isn't bad and it looks like something i just gotta have.

    thanks mad wolf.

That's what I use. The knife works fine.

Mine makes a wedge but other than that, sounds about like the same thing. I think you will be pleased with it. The torch setting it also great for when I start bon fires in the back yard.

I just use a regular, plug-it-in-the-wall, cheap-o soldering iron. It works great as long as you keep the tip clean and sharp (I had actually filed the tip to a sharp point for another purpose). After cutting a bit, just lightly clean up the tip with a metal file, and it will cut nice sharp edges. I've cut almost everything with it, from M50 and M90 to 500D nylon. No problems with fuel and having an open flame right near lots of expensive fabric.

I, also, just used a plain plug-in-the-wall soldering iron on the ripstop for my hammock. It worked great. I took a 2x6 and clamped down a metal yard stick as a straight edge on top of the nylon. It worked great and the nylon has not frayed at all.
