    Hanging with back problems

I posted some pics from my hang this past weekend in Facebook and one of my friends was asking me some questions. As he puts it, he has the back of an 80 year old. He's wondering if hammocking would be better or worse than ground camping for his back.

Is there anyone that speak to this with the voice of experience?

Much, much, much, much, much better for the back!

I don't say this with any medical authority, but as one who has suffered from a bad back. Mine used to go completely 'out' on me at least once a year. To the point that I could not walk upright for a week, or more. Had been happening since I was about 15 years old. My back has not gone out on me once since mid-2007 when I started sleeping in a hammock. Only time my back hurts now is when I stay at a hotel and can't figure out a way to hang my hammock.
    Trust nobody!

+ 1 to that, I have scoliosis and a messed up lower back. When I sleep in a comfortable bed I have to get up after about 6 hours due to the pain and stiffness. Once I move around I'm fine. In a hammock I wake up pain free and only need to get out of the hammock to go to work or answer natures call. Aside from that I can lounge or sleep to my hearts content and have ZERO stiffness or soreness.

another 'bad back' person chiming in in favor of the hammock!

however I have slept funny in hammocks before- you need to keep your back in mind whilst positioning. But yes, MUCH better than the ground.

    No pressure points...
my hammock gear weights total: 2430g (~86oz)
    Winter: total 2521 (~89oz)
(see my profile for detailed weights)

Since sleeping in a hammock full timer, I rarely have backpain.

Thanks for the replies! I think we have my friend convinced to try hammocking and maybe even rig one up at the station at night.

So much better than a bed!! I even have the memory foam type bed and the hammock feels better to my back and hips.

Another long time back sufferer here. Hammocking saved the day for me. Crawling up off the ground and out of a tent almost made it not worth it. I went from tossing and turning all night long and laying there for hours, wishing it was time to get up, to uninterupted bliss.
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

As someone who took a tumble at work resulting in compression fractures of my S1 and L5 thru 3, and now has fusion of my L5,4,and3 vertabrae, I can say that sleeping in a hammock will definatley not make the problem worse! I wouldnt go so far as to say it will help but comparing it to sleeping on the ground even on a good self inflating pad...no comparison.

Will say tho I do miss the pre sleep cuddle time with the missus.
