Academy Sports and Outdoors has a 20 dollar hammock slightly softer than the wal mart one. They also have a skeeter net for 10 you can use to make a sew on net. Not great but cheap.

Where ever you go,
There you are.
The Eno Double is a great hammock and can be picked up for ~50 off of Amazon, with free shipping.
DIY isn't nearly as difficult as you think. A hammock sized cut of 1.9 ripstop nylon will run you about 10 bucks on sale from a place like Hancock's Fabrics. They often have 40-50% off coupons, yielding good ripstop at about $2.50-2.75 per yard. Four yards of that, and you're in business.
The other option is to go with one of the large crinkle nylon tablecloths listed in the other thread. Under ~$25 shipped, and there's no sewing necessary. Whip the ends with a piece of cord, and you're in business with a soft and large hammock.
Plenty of options out there that work for somebody on a budget.
If you can, attend a group hang (even if you have to take a tent) so you can check out a bunch of different setups. Most (if not all) of us would be happy to let you crawl in our setups to check them out.
Remember there is no one perfect hammock for everyone. While I have several different hammocks, I use my BB for overnights and the others for day hikes.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
BIAS hammocks has a great deal on a starter set.
