Why don't you just use all shock cord for your tarp guy lines? Instead of tying 12" peices on each line. I know people use it for the pull outs but never seen a tarp with 100% shock cord...

I think I have seen that answered on here. I wonder the same thing
Nothing like having a stake pull in high winds and it being shot at you like a spear!

My understanding was that the shock cord was a complement to structurally sound lines. ie if the shock cord broke then you still have your tarp secured to the ground not sailing in the wind when you need it most. It's icing on the cake more so than a stand alone system. However I've seen several members that use it exclusively for side pull outs. Good question I'd also like to here from a vet on this
It will break. Easily.

Pretty sure I've seen Shug using them. I'll have a reason to watch his vids again, to see for sure. I thought he went that way so it was easier to walk around, over, under them, in close to his set up.
Maybe it was just the pull outs to his hammock, and not the tarp. That would make a little more sense.

As a 'shug-aholic' without TV, I am pretty sure the shock cord he used was only on the pull outs of his tarps. I think he took the idea from 'The Turk' if my memory serves me right .... but any reason to rewatch is a good one, so have fun!
I know other people use(d) bungee with hooks to setup their tarps, most of them I know, learned that in the (British) army with their poncho....
Like Dragon360 I would be too scared of them breaking and shooting at you with hook or tarpstake ....

richocheting stakes one reason. Shug uses his for his tarp side pull outs. - That is, the ones that simply hold the sides out, not actually hold the tarp down.
Also, you want some rigidity in your tarp or it would flap all over the place.

gram counter, not gram weenie!
Years of using tarps tells me that bungees/shock cord only leads to disaster from being impaled either by just the hook on the end and/or the peg. And frankly, most shop-bought bungees are far to heavy duty for the requirement. The system I've settled on is to lay out two strands of guy & tie thumb in knots every foot or so. The guy lie is then warped around what ever anchor point you choose and then fed back through the tautest 'segment'. Works every time, is totally reliable whatever the wind, is cheap and remains fastened to the tarp. What's not to like?!
Shock cord isn't very economic weight wise so convensional wisdom is that a short tensioner will accomplish what is needed while also posing less risk for launching a stake catapult style.
