    Snakeskins for JH

Which snakeskins best fit the Claytor JH? I bought the Hennesey "Snakeskins 3", but they have already ripped open, because there's too much fabric at the ends of the hammock.

Should I order the "Snakeskins 4", or does everyone use something else?

Also, can the JH be set up so that the rainfly and hammock can be collapsed together in a single pair of snakeskins?

I would leave them separate. if your tarp is wet and you put them in the skins together then your hammock will get wet as well.

Snake skins are very easy to make (I even made some). I found cheap mesh material at Wal-Mart and made some.

Even if you don't sew, getting someone to hem the ends and make one long seam (I made mine as one, long skin) is easy, and you should be able to find someone to help you.

I also agree that keeping the tarp and hammock in separate skins is the way to go.
The harder I work, the luckier I get.

I'd rather purchase pre-made snakeskins instead of making them.

Making snake skins is called sewing rehearsal... It's the next step up from stuff sacks because the seams are longer. That's about the only reason people actually make them. That plus if you have scrap fabric lying around you might as well do something with it.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I can usually find the directions for diy stuff easily, but for some reason can't find the tutorial for them here anymore. Anyone know where the tutorial is?

Why would you say that? I easily could have bought them (I guess), but making them, I made them exactly as I wanted, as well as sewing practice.

I used this post as a starting point to make my latest set of skins: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=1408

Ah. Thank you. Tarp skins, huh? I would never have searched for that...

I added a "snake skins" tag to it, for future searches.

I guess I figure that getting something "exactly as I wanted" is part of the sewing rehearsal. It's part of the design and decision making that goes into making something more complicated. Don't get me wrong. I'm not putting them down. But lets face it, they are a far cry from Griz's structural seam in DMB in terms of things going on at once. Plus I use snake skins to get practice on french seams so when I am making something that people are going to look at the french seams will look decent without a bunch of fringe hanging out... like a guy who hasn't shaved for 6 days. That's all I was saying.

I still don't know which pre-made snakeskins would fit the JH.
