    hanging in afghanistan?

I have accepted a position as a civilian contractor that requires me to spend a year in Afghanistan - more than likely at Kabul. Of course, I would rather spend that year in a hammock versus the cot that will probably be provided.

I've just starting recently hanging and have a GTUL with a DIY bugnet. I will probably upgrade before I go. Does anyone have any recent experience in the area? Will I be able to mod my living quarters for a hammock (even a hammock stand possibly)?

    Any info i greatly appreciated....

I was there in 2006 and we lived in plywood huts. there was barely enough room for a bed in my little area. conditions have likely improved since then but i can't say how much. one of the guys that i work with was there last year, i will ask him when i get back from this 3 week trip that i'm on right now.

You'd be surprised, we had decent bunks and slept in Alaskan tents, (Quanset Hut style) Looking back, our metal frame bunks would have been perfect for stringing a hammock on.
Had I been into hammocking back then I'da probably gone that route.
I'd get with your sponsor and ask.
Travel well, be safe and THANK YOU for your service.

I got my bestfriend an ENO before he went back for his second deployment. I'm not sure how he hung it up exactly but he said he slept in it almost every night this go around. He said his first deployment he wouldnt have been able to because they were doing a lot of stuff outside of a base at night. I would say if you are in a protected enclosure you should have any troubles setting something up

Some discussion here about hanging in Afghanistan but mostly by soldiers hanging between hescos. First time I've seen that word.

    http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/sh...4-ENO-hammocks

    And more soldiers with hammocks.

Fun reading, but I don't know about civilian accommodations. Wogs and Shnick know, so listen to them, and good luck over there.

A buddy of mine just got back a few months ago from a year long deployment. I got him set up with a WBBB that he hung in nearly every night. He said he slept great in the C130 for the ride over while the rest of his crew was hatting it. I'll see if I can get some pics from him.

Also keep in mind your job. If it requires you going outside the wire, I'd definetely bring it, just make sure no one steals it. (not kidding)
If not, you should be OK with a top quilt, maybe a pad.

Rainy season is late Jan-mid Feb, you'll be 300 miles north of Kandahar so it'll be colder. I'd look forward to sub 32 deg. F. Fun fun... In a tent it'll be heated and you'll do OK.
The taliban destroyed much of the daily weather info for AFG but a british dude started it all over again and posted it here:

I forgot how beautiful it is over there. We did some awesome low level routes in all those mountains!!

I don't miss those stinking plywood huts though. I would go back in a minute though, it was way better than Iraq for mission and scenery!

Wow, thanks for all of the feedback. I don't officially start until the 16th, and it will be a few months after that before I go, so I will have plenty of time to get some info about the actual conditions.

Yeah, they do pay a lot, but it does come at a price. I'll keep you posted. I think a WBBB is in my near future.....
