    Hammock level

    Hammock level.png

Someone [Edit: Alrany187] was asking about using a line level to set up his hammock and I thought I'd make this drawing of an ultra light-weight level I made. I laid it out on a plastic margarine tub top. I drew two 30-60-90 degree triangles side by side and cut it out with an x-acto knife. I punched a hole in the middle. I hung it up on a line and checked that it hung level. I shaved minute bits of weight off the heavier side with a block sander. Once it was level, I hung it from the ridge line with a bread twistie tie.

It shows me what's level and also gives me the 30 degree angle of the suspension lines. It weighs virtually nothing.

I thought it was overkill, but when I don't have it, I miss it. I like my hammocks dead level and it can be hard to eyeball that, especially on a slope. Hope you like it!!

Overkill, to be sure, but the style points are off the scale.

That would have been me, Pips. Love your idea and creativity. I wasn't as creative and bought a line level for $1.50 at Home Depot. I like my hammocks level too or at least a little higher at the foot. Once again, it is beautiful.

Pips...I like the multi use level, especially the 30-60-90* part.

I, on the other hand, am not that handy. And if I had a line level, I know I could find a way to break it inside my pack.

I just use a see through water bottle filled about half full and stand back a ways from my hammock and hold it up at eye level. I compare the ridge line with the water line and that tells me if my set up is level or not.

Would orange Gatorade work? Yep, a Nalgene bottle and the finger/thumb-like-a-pistol trick accomplishes the same thing. Although an added benefit to this ultra light-weight level is that it's fun to watch it "dance" up and down your ridge line in a breeze! Glad you liked it.
