    underquilts and wind chill

During my recent section hike, I became very aware of wind chill.

My underquilt it a clone of a JRB. a close enough copy that people often ask if it is one. I have slept comfortable down to mid 20's with it. Other nights, I haven't been comfortable. I always attributed the variance to the tightness of the hang.

One night, on Chestnut Knob, it was very windy. (I mean the reknown "howling" mountain winds). I finally had to add my sleeping pad to survive. Real temps were above freezing.

I finally thought of wind chill and began to sleep in the shelters on cold nights. With both the down bag and the underquilt on top, I was very warm and cozy, if a bit uncomfortable.

I had brought my dri-ducks poncho to which I had added corner loops and end lanyards to adjust fit (same as the underquilt has) . I think this is similar to the "weathershield" that JRB markets. I had never tested it for this use.

Finally, week or so later, I remembered I was so equipped and rigged it on a windy night, The difference was amazing. I was quite comfortable, even with the wind whistling in.

Just saying that it worked for me.

Great story. Wind is often overlooked when considering night time temps. Good reminder of what to prepare for.

Absolutely! I have been using my poncho under my hammock ever since I first read about Ray Garlington's "Taco" idea. since I already carry a poncho, it was no added weight (like a dedicated sock).

Love, love, love my hammock sock. With this new longer and wider hammock that I made I'll have to make another sock. When the temps drop and the winds start up it's nice to have that surround protection.

Because I camp in humid conditions, I've had both my Underground under quilts made with true waterproof on the outside layer ripstop. Because it's waterproof it's also wind proof. This may not work for a lot of people, but for me it's perfect!!

We all hammock!! But It's our abiltiy to adapt and use different ideas that makes our setups totally different from each other's.

Wind is like a thief in the night, stealing warmth from our rigs.

I have experimented with overcovers, weathershields and socks which has made me a firm believer that these things are an integral part of your kit if you're going to be camping in the wind.

BTW, It's great to hear from you Grinder! I can't wait to hear your campfire stories of your trip.
