Where do you put your gear?

    Hey,
So where do you guys leave your gear for the night? I've seen some gear slings and people who hang their gear off trees, or I guess you could just leave it on the ground?

It seems like if you hang it on the tree, you would run into some issues with bugs and or sap and of course rain.

On the ground you would have bugs and possible water (if it's raining) or mud.

Gear slings seem like they would add extra weight and don't seem to be able to hold that much and or have a low weight limit.

So what do you guys do?

    Bill

I pack it into my pack liner and leave it under the hammock.

Anything I need in camp goes on my ridgeline. Mess kit & first-aid/hygiene kit go in bear bag. Empty pack goes wherever. I have a bit of plastic that I'll set it on if muddy, or hang it up somewhere. It is usually empty in camp so no real worries.

Some have gear slings that double as pack covers so everything just gets tossed on those with their packs.

In general, I avoid sites where I'm hanging over dirt, much less mud. Mostly forest duff, leaves and stuff. I've got a solo tent footprint that I use underneath me that I throw my stuff on. I also have a larger tarp that gives me a lot of coverage underneath, although by more recent standards, its not all that large.

    I've tried several different methods:

Hung from the loops at the end of the ridgeline inside of my Hennessy.

On the ground under the hammock, by itself, or on top of a sit pad, or on top of my poncho, or inside of a compactor bag pack liner.

    Hung from a tree.

Nowadays, I hang my front pack (where my water is) from the hammock's head-end suspension. My backpack (empty) gets hung from the foot end of the hammock suspension.

I'm sleeping in the hammock, underneath the tarp, with my quilts and any extra clothing I brought; my phone, knife, e-charger, map, and compass go into the ridgeline organizer. My headlamp gets laksheaded to the ridgeline.

My bear bag--containing my food, cook kit, and garbage--gets hung at least 100 yards from the hammock.

My poncho goes on the ground as a "porch" area. My emergency kit/first aid kit/personals kit goes on top of that. My shoes go there as well (shake 'em out in the morning, though). If the weather is really bad, I'll hang the poncho at one end of my tarp as an improv Grizz beak; under those circumstances, the ditty bag containing my kits gets tied to the ridgeline and the shoes get moved all the way underneath the hammock.

    That's everything that I carry.
