super cheap super effective under pad!

The other day I was perusing the local dallor store for some cheap stove alcohol and ran across a 5*2 insulated sun reflector for your windshield in the summer. It waieghed almost nothing and folded down family small, so the gears start spinning in the ol' noggin ... "that would make a great under pad." The good part about this whole deal/was it only cost $2.50! So I bought one and tried yesterday, it worked great. Kept me nice and cozy warm all night which was hovering around 5 degrees celcius. Me a happy camper now/.... later folks

I've been using the reflector windshield screen for a while. Your right, they work good, pack small, cost very little. I found mine for $1.00.
    Sit pad
    Food cozy
    Under Pad
    Shiny survival attention getter
And of course a windshield thingie..but wheres the fun in that?

It isnt a breathable item tho, condensation can/will build up when the temps are right.

Lowe's stocks a bubble insulation foil-backed on both sides . Comes in 16", 24" and 48" wide rolls. Not expensive. It is very similar to sun screen.

I stuck mine between the layers of a poncho liner UQ last week. It works great, but had a little condensation. I also took one and made a sit pad and freezer bag cozy. I was able to straight stitch the edges of the cozy together on my thread injector! Good stuff.

BIG TIME! I woke up last weekend and everything was soaked. So much for that. I'll still bring it along just in case I need to use it in an emergency - but will never use it from the beginning of the night again.

    Something else to try

I've gotten away from using mine centered under me. Instead I shift it to the wind side or exposed side, if in porch mode, and only keep enough under the pad to hold it in place some. I could cut it down, because it usually ends up folded double this way, but it weights nothing and packs away nicely as is.

My back usually ends up against it mostly, and it seems to cut down on condensation well.

If it is for keeping heat in your body: no need for the reflective layer.

Until and unless you can hold a big magnifying glass, and bring tinder to smoking by concentrating the heat coming off your body.

    Try seeing it this way:

Heat a saucepan of water to body temp: 100F = 38C.
The pot of water is your body.

Put a crockery plate over it,
or put a silvery lid on it.

If they both fit the same, whether "the same" means "well" or "poorly"

    then:

You'll be hard pressed to detect the difference in rate of cooling with a non-digital thermometer.
