i think they are both safe if done right. if it came down to what has less possible points of failure, probably the toggles.

I would think it would be easier for a soft shackle to get sucked in but toggles have a chance of breaking. Pick your poison I guess, but I'm more comfortable with toggles.

I use either - toggles with webbing tree huggers and soft shackle with rope tree huggers.

Which is safer? As the old saying goes, "it's half a dozen of one or six of the other."

Either one can lead to being on the ground if not used properly and either one can be super safe and strong if done properly. I find the soft shackles to be as secure as metal carabiners.

I like the toggles since there are always plenty available under any tree I hang from. Easy to use with webbing but extremely difficult to use with rope huggers.

I like the soft shackles because they are very strong, secure and light and when made using the Solomon bar scarab, very easy to use.

The soft shackles can be used equally well with either webbing or rope huggers, but they do add some offset from each tree (toggles can be tied closer if needed) and if the tree span is tight already, they can make it difficult or impossible to hang from 2 particular trees.

    Thanks in advance!

This how to tie it. And attached is what it looks like when used as a cinch/loop stop on a whoopie.

They both can be safe when made correctly and used correctly. Toggles used with a marlin spike hitch allow infinite adjustment in a lenght of webbing.
