Kayak & Hammock Camp Savannah area

    Howdy all,

A buddy and I want to kayak and hammock camp over a weekend in the Savannah area. We've discussed Little Tybee, but also possibly Intracoastal between Charleston-Savannah or Augusta-Savannah via the Savannah River, or some such. Anyone done any of these or something else nearby and have recommendations/advice (other than that the bugs will eat us alive in June)?

There's a lot of good fishing in the area (can be found doing a search on the GON forum or GKF forum). The bugs can definitely be an issue this time of year

Yes, indeed. May make a go at some Kayak fishing, but I have this vision of Old Man and the Sea and getting pulled out into the Atlantic... :-)

BUMP. C'mon fellow Georgians (and nearby South Carolinians and Floridians)! There've gotta be some ideas out here. For one thing, there are the Georgia barrier islands, e.g. Little Tybee, Ossabaw, etc. For another, I thought about an Altamaha River trip. However, I'm hoping someone on the forums has some actual experiences to share...

Keep me posted. I'm saving up for a kayak - should pull the trigger on the WS Ride 115 sometime in mid-July. I'm up in NW Ga, but sure would like to get out on the water and catch some big reds or a sea trout. Late Sept - October would get you the best weather....July and August = brutal heat down there. When you set a date, let me know.

Just a quick update to say that I kayaked out to Little Tybee (a very brief and easy paddle) and camped quite comfortably on the last weekend in June before the sweltering summer heat set it. Found an excellent campsite with lots of trees and had two hammocks set up with a couple of tenters (a/k/a "suckers"), as well. I've got some pictures somewhere that I hope to post, but I wanted to update anyone who lives in this area that it's a nice weekend camping trip. No reservations needed. Bugs were fortunately somewhat minimal (lots of wind that weekend), but it would certainly be ideal in the fall.

Thanks for the update. I was just out near there recently. That's a great area.

I'll be interested in seeing your pictures when you post them. I have done some kayak camping, but in Texas it can be difficult to find a place to hang a hammock on the river bank - if you stray far enough up the bank to find trees, you are likely to be considered trespassing, whereas the sandy banks and islands are permissible.
