I suggest the Ellicot Rock area of the Chatooga for a first solo. The area Burrells Ford and north is one of my favorite spots. My next trip will be the SC foothills trail loop at Burrells Ford. Maybe a 10 mile loop??

Plenty of access to water and other hikers
Well marked trails and lots of good waterfalls
Kind of tough to get lost because of the river. Just follow it back to parking.
Fly/trout fishing if you want that
Well established sites or plenty of off trail/stealth places
Enough terrain and elevation changes to get out of the "cold sinks" in the bottoms and plenty of natural features to use as wind breaks if a storm comes up

If you want to do the AT, pay attention to the bear bag requirements in the lower sections. Also, I don't recommend starting at the Unicoi Gap parking and going either direction. Fairly tough uphill both directions with lots of ankle breaker rocks.

Check GA AT club for current warnings re: water sources, bear bag requirements, etc.
