I'm looking to maximize comfort (add width) while keeping weight of ~6.5oz (subtracting length)...
As the others have alluded to, it is the length that lets you use the width to lay diagonally. Take away the length and you can't use the width.

The group buy ACU is actually a 1.0 oz ripstop. I can't believe you started with a 68" wide fabric and cut away all the good stuff.

Gotcha. In retrospect I wish I hadn't cut off the excess, but I was looking for a smaller hammock than my doublenest. Lessons learned.

SimpleRabbit: Can you link me to instructions on how to do the gathered channel?
John: Wouldn't adding more sag cause the sides to be less taught = less support from sides? (which is what I don't like right now.. i think..)
Perhaps, but the Knotty Stretch Side Mod would fix that!

I usually take the height rounded, and then add 5 feet. IMHO you should be in a 11' completed hammock. That would be the measurement from gathered end/suspension placement to other gathered end/suspension placement. As for going wider, if you have the material than you may very well like it. I've recently found that I really like them super wide. Your feet don't fall out, your topquilt doesn't disappear on you and its just really comfortable.

also, remember that 83% ridgeline is a good starting figure- it isn't the right one for everyone.
