Hammock magnetism!

Thanks uutuku &Schnick! I figured the versatility justified the weight on using full size material for the lower layer. That's gonna be my rain gear once I finish the head hole. I am trying to get brave enough to make a hood. I use a wide brim Tilley hat so the hood is not as crucial. Thought I'd make a flap to cover the head hole while hanging on the hammock.

That's a neat idea. How much do you figure the magnets weigh?

The magnets come on packs of 10. I keep meaning to take what I have left to work to put on the postal scale. I used 46 I think. I bet they all weigh maybe 2-3oz. That might be on the high side. I think they're worth every gram. It has worked well so far in test hangs. I have tried those truck sunshades as insulation before. They were terrible to skid around everywhere when i got in the hammock. Since the outer layer doesn't automatically pull tight with the main layer, it does not make them squirt around.

hiknhanger, on my prototype I used velcro dots to hold the insulfleece in place if needed and it was a partial failure. Had a thought about sewing loops of light cord on the sides of whatever inner insulation used inline with the magnets. Will advise how it works when I get to that point.

By the way, I finally weighed the magnets. They weigh 0.05 oz each, so with 46 used I added 2.3 oz or 65.2 grams. Totally worth it.

This sort of modular system makes perfect sense. you could use a variety of stuffings. So long as they all have the same loops in the same places, you could make insulation for all seasons and all weights. very intrigued by this thread. Keep the pictures coming!

I've been thinking about this idea for a couple of days now. Instead of loops, maybe a lightweight metal tab to stick on the hammock magnet. You could then sandwich that metal tab between the hammock magnet and the underlayer magnet. That way if you needed to remove the bottom layer/weather shield, you wouldn't lose your insulation. Just my second two cents.
