In Oregon, we have some big trees, so I bring 8' straps and 8' whoopies and have used the entire length many times. I use hiking poles to push the straps up high to get the right geometry. But in Florida, I bet you could get by with a lot less.

So for a 6' whoopie sling, how much Amsteel do you start with?
You would double the length of how long you want your whoopies because it loops in half.

That's right, although you lose a little bit to the constrictors and back splice.

I start with roughly 12' and my whoopies end up just under 6' "in neutral." (i.e. the tail and fixed eye pulled out equally.) That gives a working range of about 20" to about 10'.

Mine are just way too long Whatever the standard is that I bought them at, either 6 or 8'. Especially with my longer DIY hammocks. I think I'll change over to amsteel chain links and will adjust with with tree straps (mule tape). Maybe pack the whoopies to larkshead on if I need them.
