Old Loggers Path - Sullivan Mountain

This weekend myself and a friend of mine will be hiking the entire OLP for the first time. Since I am someone that actually has to work on Memorial Day we are limited to hiking on Saturday and Sunday and spending just the one night camping. Because of this I was planning on camping at Long Run since it works out to be about halfway. There is one other possibility I was considering and it leads to my question of the day.

Are there any good camping possibilities at the peak of Sullivan Mountain?

The idea of camping on top of Sullivan Mountain near one of the overlooks is very appealling. Does anyone know if that will work out for us? A fire ring would be nice, but not an absolute necessity. I'm asking this because I don't want to hike up there planning to set up camp and then find out that it really isn't a good place for it. None of the maps I've seen have a campsite marked in that location but that guarantees nothing. Any insight that anyone has is appreciated.

Oh, we are both hammock campers in case anyone is wondering.

    Old Logger's Path hanging options

My recollection is that you can camp or hang at both overlooks, but you will need to pack in with you the water you want for the evening and morning in camp. I camped at one of the overlooks and had a very enjoyable view of the sunset and sunrise from there. If you camp at the first overlook (going counterclockwise) there is a forest road that locals use to see the sunset and you will have company on a nice night, but then they will all leave and you'll have it to yourselves.

Thanks, that sounds like it could be a nice spot. We still may decide to camp at Long Run (it all depends on how our feet are when we arrive at the campsite) but at least we know Sullivan would be a suitable alternative.

    old loggers path

Hiked it years ago. As I remember it their is nowhere near the middle of the hike with a view. I kayak a creek that you will be crossing (rock run) a beautiful class 4 run in a very pretty area. If you start on yellow dog road where it crosses rock run theirs a camp spot right there. Then you would hike counter clockwise on the trail. That would put you at sharp top vista on the first night. This is the best view on the trail and nothing short of spectacular. It's not quite half way but the view is worth the few miles you would have to hike the next day. The normal start place is masten. check it out on your map. If you need more info just drop me a pm and I'll help. Hope this helps Bob Mac

Here's a NG map that is pretty accurate as far as views go. There are several vistas and if I remember, most of them afford hanging ops.
