    How long is your whoopie?

    Oh come on now.

I am seriously trying to decide how long to make the Whoopie Slings. While the advantage of having the longer whoopie is obvious (being able to hang between trees that are futher apart) I really don't want to be carrying around the additional weight if it is not necessary. Right now I have a ridiculous amount of extra length on the slings I made, but am reluctant to cut them down for risk of coming up short when out in the field.

    Any advice?

    Thanks.

How high can you place the strap in a tree?

I can't reach enough to have a spread more than 20 feet without a ladder or stuck to push the straps up.

I started out with 10 ft. whoopies 'cause the hang points in my back yard are 25 ft. apart. In the field, that's overkill - I just use 6 ft. whoopies now. I would never select trees 25 ft. apart in the field.

Honestly: Tidier to have shorter slings, and use most of the length so there's less dragging and hanging out there. Just keep a short extension loop tucked away in the pack, likely getting rare use.

Unmentioned is that this ought to depend on the length of your hammock. If your hmmk is already occupying 11feet of space.......

I originally made my whoopies 6', but in the 2+ years I've been hanging, I've only used the full length once. Most of the time, I have them set at 4' or below, so usually about 5' hanging off each end. While that's a rather negligible weight, it often gets in the way. I usually have 2 extenders in my pack as well, so I'll probably cut them down one of these days.

It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

My 6 footers have served me well with 5' tree straps.

Thanks folks. I will cut down to 6 feet and pack some extenders.

I was doing some test hangs in the pine forest behind my house and was hanging crazy distances of up to 40 feet. Since it is a bridge hammock with a structural ridge-line I was able to cheat on the angles. While this did work, the hammock became very "tippy" kind of like sleeping on a high-wire.

40 feet?! Were you spanning a river?

So for a 6' whoopie sling, how much Amsteel do you start with?

A lot less than if you are spanning a river.

Here is a link to a good website for materials as well as some plans like the Whoopie Sling plan shown in the link.
