So I just thought I might ask incase someone had a straight up answer for me.

Q, I'll send you some mason line - I have tons of it. Preference to color between day-glo yellow or plain? I may have bright pink or hunter orange as well. It's usually in the same section of the hardware store as all the other rope. They also have similar stuff at sporting goods stores in the marine or hunting sections. Once you get some, you'll know what to look for.

get braided nylon, not mixed materials, not twisted.

if you want hunter green or black and white instead of flourescent, get stringliner brand. google it, they have a website and their line is better than some of the other brands. owf has a pretty nice 3/16"? double braid nylon in black for anyone who wants thin black line. it's a little heavier than mason line, but only would be noticeable for long sections.

I'm glad you said that! I was going to warn Qchan to make sure its braided. I made the mistake of getting the braided and then had my wife tell me to move by hammock whipping outside for the sanctity of my childrens ears (they hadn't walked in the room yet, but just in case!). The twisted stuff came apart faster than I could whip the ends of the hammock. Lesson learned!

Any idea about what section you'd go to for that? Or is it different in every store?

mason tells me it's somthing to do with rocks.... but I don't really know if there is a mason's section....
Mason's are brick layers. They use this line to set a perfectly horizontal guide for laying bricks, so yes, in the big box stores it will be by the concrete, etc. This is where to find the braided. Over by the ropes you may see some other Mason's line, but this will be twisted.

Why did bricklayers, stone workers have to come up with their own specialty line just for this? Must be a cult thing? Kinda like hammockers.....

Can anyone give any input on 550 cord? I asked earlier in this thread but no one responded. Didn't want to waste a new topic since whipping material is covered here.

I've got some 550 laying around and if it will work, it will save me a trip to the hardware store and a little dough.

    Any help is appreciated.

I'd say try it. I've seen photos of folks using it but it often looks like they've removed the core. Since it's not part of the support structure, you shouldn't really have any safety issues.
