Heading up to the SHT 5/24-5/27

Anyone been up on the Superior Hiking Trail in the last few days? Most importantly, are the black flies out yet? Any skeeters? Debating on which hammock to bring, what bug dope if any etc etc. I heard there was a fire already this spring. Is there a fire ban?

I have not been up there for 2 weeks. There were no flies or any other small winged blood sucking creatures out yet...of course that could have all changed. The fire danger is ok. There has been some rain up there recently. I checked the DNR website and there are no restrictions. Here is a link to the DNR website. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/...trictions.html

Have fun and give us a report when you get back.

    From the SHT site........

May 11, 2012: Reports are that the trail is in excellent hiking condition. Ticks are out but no mosquitoes or black flies yet. Lot of spring wildflowers and new leaves on all the trees! Creeks and rivers have plenty of water, The woods are dry but no fire condition warnings. As always, make a small fire from only dead and down wood, and make sure it is completely out before you leave your campsite.[/I]

    Have a terrific time,

I was near the Finland area 2 weeks ago and it was too cold for anything to be buzzing around. I read a post on the SHT facebook group that a couple people ran into a few skeets. With the recent warm weather here, I would go there ready for battle
Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!

Big temp swings depending on which way the wind is blowing. Lake Superior water temps off shore is still in the upper 30*F. I would plan for the worst regarding mosquitoes. With the recent rains the black flies and mossies are probably happy.

Drat. well I'll pack the WBBB then just to be safe and treat my clothes with premethrin tonight. I'm looking forward to a few days on the trail. Last time I was out, there was still snow on the ground!

Glad I checked the weather before I headed out this morning. Heavy Rain/thunderstorms/flooding/stationary front. I don't mind a bit of rain but I'm not as hale and hearty as some about storm hanging. Looks like the YRSF for me this weekend. Be careful Pizza. There's gonna be some hairy stream/river crossings on the SHT this weekend.
