Lightweight Backpack Recomendation for Gangly, Lanky, er, Tall folks?

I'm 6'4" with average legs and long torso. I'm looking for recommendations for a good ultra-light or light backpack. My current pack weighs in at 8 pounds, and is ~90L! It's made for tall folks though. I sooo want to replace it but a trip to REI leaves me wondering if there are many packs out there that "fit" the bill.

Ideally it would be less than or about 3 lbs, and about 40-45 L. Serious bonus points for less than $200!

I'm open to DIY, but would like something I can use sooner than later. DIY for me (schedule wise) means well into the fall.

I'm 6' 4" as well and just bought an Osprey Atmos 50. It's just over 3 LBS, so not truely lightweight, but I was able to get it in an L size and it fits just fine. For reference I am tall in the trunk with short (33" inseam) legs for my height. I'm also round at 275 LBS, this pack just fits great.

This following looks intriguing, but for Less than 1 LBS it costs $259 without additions. They have an interesting accessories like hip belt pouches, a chest pack, etc.

Have you looked at ULA Equipment they got some good packs, and their sizing is very broad!!!

just went from a large atmos 50 to a large ula circuit and the circuit seems to fit me better (6'3") and i like it quite a bit better than the atmos, the main reason being the ease of packing and not having to deal with the "hump" on the inside of the pack from the airspeed suspension

there is also some play in how the hipbelt fits as far as up and down, the hipbelt is attached with velcro and is move-able some to help with the fit

if you get one used you should be below the $200 mark

While I am only 6 ft. I would recommend you take a look at a golite jam 50l or 70l!!! they are on sale at the moment (though I think the 70l is out of stock), and they weigh in at 1lb. 15oz, and are great packs!! If you manage to get one while they are on sale it is amazing seeing as it only cost me 90 dollars for the golite jam 70l !

Try golite, the jam comes in a 35L, 50L, and 70L. Also on the same sight, the pinnacle. Jam was voted best all around pack in one of the backpackers magz and its the cheapest, plus they have a 50% off sale going on right now. Hard to beat.

there are 2 brands that i like and use
ULA and Golite they both fit very good and ride nice on long hikes
the golite is nice if you sweat cause you get a little more air flow
but the ULA packs are the best pack out there IMO the back pocket on there packs can fit a LOT of gear and they seem to have the best mix of features

it all comes down to what works best for you .... i say go to a hang or an REI and try on some packs

ULA! Im a little taller. 6'8". With 24"+ back measurement (XL). They have the range to cover our longer torso's. Go Lite is good to about 22.5" I believe. I packed the Jam for a while ...super nice pack. But the fit caused me troubles. I now have a XL ULA Ohm 2.0. I can get so much stuff in it. Great 3 season pack. The pockets are excellent. The pack is fully tricked out and under 2lbs. So easy to dial in a custom fit with the hip belt height adjustment, load lifetrs etc. Its a little over your budget but IMO the best pack out there. Well thought out. Well made. Great customer service. Call Chris and talk with him, he'll help you in exactly what you need. Glad I did.
