Needle recommendations for whoopie sling?

I think most people are using a piece of wire folded in half or my favorite, a Dritz Loop Turner, to splice amsteel.

HA has a lot of helpful advise, hints, and tips-n-tricks... Using the Loop Turner is one of them. I just made an adjustable ridge line using the thin yellow line sold at WB (I'm not sure what it's marketing name is) using one of these. My first try at such a task... Not easy, but not hard... Thanks.

I have some stiff wire from the hardware store. Used as tie wire. Take a long piece, fold in half and kinda crimp the fold down tight. Push wire through, hook end in the crimp, pull back through. Easy.

I have a Dritz Loop Turner, stiff picture hanger wire folded in half, a "large" metal needle and a plastic one too, a Bodkin, and a sewing awl or two, plus blue painters tape, but ...

... have found my best friend for 7/64ths Amsteel to be a #6 knitting needle. It opens the Amsteel up just about perfect into a hollow channel.

THEN I can use one of the other devices to pull the other end through.

Folded piece of 027 music wire. Works in Amsteel no problems. Works on Zingit with very little effort, it's all ya ever need. Well, except for makikng brummels I use a ballpoint pen to open up a hole through the center of the Amsteel. It's a fancy screw retractable ballpoint pen so when I work on the Zingit I take the refill out of it and use that as it's real skinny.

If you can find a hobby shop that still sells it by the single piece it's usually under abuck.

Very effective is an 8" piece of coat hanger wire, taper the cord and tape a piece of masking tape to the cord and hanger wire, it slides through very easily.

Yarn needles from Walmart work good too!

I use this needle. Very blunt end and when you taper the end of the amsteel it easily fits in the eye. Works with 1/8 and 7/64. Get them from Walmart for less than $2. That gets you two. Maybe you can find them cheaper.

Shesh, when I made my Two whoopies. I spent hours, trying to bury the ends. Trying to stuff it back in for the 10 inch bury.
I ended up using copper wire make a hook, Cut a tapper on the 7/64" then hook it, tape it down. Add some water based lube, Working it cm by cm. fingers were sore after words. BUT... got me Two Whoopies!!!. and proud of it.. Impressive how they work.

The 3/16" Amsteel was a breeze. Made one loop in my 150 footer. Still waiting on what to do with it.. alway's good to have some laying around :-)

For those that haven't seen a Dritz Loop Turned being used, here's a brief video I posted in an earlier thread to illustrate the ease of use with 7/64" Amsteel.

I've used most of the other methods and still use a doubled over wire for zing it, but the loop turner remains my go to tool for Amsteel.

Holy cow! That loop turner is a life saver! I kicked the dog, turned over the tv, burned a small village all in my whoopie rage. Then I woke up, realized I didn't have a dog, still turned over the tv as an excuse for a larger one, and I've never even been to a small village. Then I bought a loop turner and all is well with the universe!
