    Cuben Hammock

Just stumbled across this guy's site. Dedicated to Cuben Fiber.

Hmmmm . . . I'm not really a gram counter, but I do like high tech . . . just another way to spend my allowance, I guess.

Ohno for HF has a cuben fiber hammock and tarp. The stuff is incredibly light. I saw some Cuben Fiber packs at trail days. If there ever comes a day I can afford Cuben Fiber, it will be the same day I will donate more money to charity. The stuff is really expensive. .....hmmm make a 5 oz hammock or feed a village in Africa. Hmmm make a 7 ounce tarp or help some 10 year old with cancer go to a ball game. Which should I do. Which should I do?

Maybe if it becomes more popular it will come down in price. And maybe there won't be any hungry people in Africa some day.

Just off the top of my head; couldn't you make a complete hammock and tarp setup for under $300?

I think it would take about 11 yards to make a hammock and a tarp and cuben fiber at Quest is $27.95 for the .48 oz per sq yard. So that is $307 plus you need that special tape for the ridge line. And you will need suspension so about $350 with shipping and everything. Maybe that not so bad. You would pay almost $300 for an HH ULBA and an OES tarp. Onother down side to CF is it is only 50" or 48" wide. The material is almost clear which has pluses and minuses. It was neat to see Ohno's stuff because he had to pay for it.

That's gardenville's site. He is a member here at HF.

I'm intrigued by CF for a tarp, though I need to hone my fabrication skills before I go mucking-up $25/yd fabric. (I think the greater sin would be wasting it because I didn't know what I was doing.)

I don't know that it would be great for a hammock though. Does anyone know if it breathes or how it feels next to the skin?

There is talk about the cuben tape almost eliminating the need for sewing, being just as strang as a sewn seam. You would still have to sew the tie outs but they would be much more forgiving I would think.

I love Cuben Fiber and will, someday, have a Cuben Fiber tarp. For now, I am using 0.6 oz. cuben exclusively for all my stuff sacks.
