90x132" Crinkle Taffeta Tablecloth Double Wall Question

    Double Wall Question
    I received 2 - 90x132" Crinkle Taffeta Tablecloths from

    http://www.efavormart.com/silver-90x...blecloths.aspx

and was wondering if anyone has built a double walled hammock out of this stock? In looking at it this might be accomplished one of two ways
    1. folding lengthwise at 60 inches leaving a 30 inch pocket (the least effort), or
    2. Cutting 30 inches off and sewing to the middle of the 60 inch hammock body. something like

    http://www.backwoodsdaydreamer.com/diy-guides/hammock/

This is a prototype to build $17 dollar hammocks for our scout troop that will accommodate insulation and ward off mosquito tail.

May I recommend you go with 60x126 as it will avoid the extra work.

I would also go with a darker color to hide the dirt.

Thanks for posting that link. I was wondering where some vendors that are selling hammock blanks were getting them prehemmed. I just need a little more imagination when it comes to fabric sources.

    Cheers

Ok....your talking double layered hammock. I was confused for a brief second, nothing new there .

I'm not sure what the 30" is going to get you? Some drawbacks to that is being able to change the angle of how one lays and moving the pad to that angle. The pad isn't usually going the banana route. As for sewing the 30" at an angle....again this limits how your scout will lay and keeps him strictly laying at the angle you've supplied him (sewn the layer). Some people are head left, and feet right...where as others are head right, and feet left.

We went with the 30 inch sleeve down the middle that the double wall setup provides. minus hems it rounds out to 58 inches wide.
As for the oblique lay vs banana, I believe it will at least allow for the torso and bottom-end to lay within the insulation/pad; not perfect, but for $17...
As for the hem, the table cloth edges come hemmed, but with these mods the raw edges need to be hemmed.

Do they have smaller tableclothes or runners that have the hem so you don't have to sew? ie 126" x 30" or 132" x 30" or something close to it??? Just an idea.

For kids you should be fine just folding the 90" in half for a 45" width. That is if you're determined to have a double layer to slide in insulation.

Or you could just get single width 60" tablecloths. They have a poly one that's not taffeta, but should be fine for less than $10. I've order a blank so I'll know in a few days what it's like.

They actually have a 50x120. That's the narrowest width I've seen. The 60x126 is less expensive...

FWIW...By my scales, the poly version is 4.8oz/sq.yd.

Oofah! The crinkle taffeta comes out to around 2.6oz/sy

Well, what's it like otherwise? Make a decent hammock for the yard?

Not bad, not spectacular. It will make a decent yard hammock...especially for the price.
