DIY Climashield Summer TQ & Pillow

Thought I'd post a few pics of my first hand at some DIY projects. Final specs and weights to come. Apologies in advance for the horrendous quality of the photos. (Don't Judge)

    DIY Climashield 3-Season TQ

    (Inspiration from KLHinNC)

Plan on using this TQ as a summer/fall quilt. I'll probably end up buying or making a down winter TQ if I find myself braving it in some deep cold. Very surprised how warm this thing is right off the bat. Hope to use it comfortably down to ~40 degree range.

    • 1.1oz Ripstop Nylon
    • Snaps to close in footbox

    DIY Climashield Ridgeline Pillow

    • 6oz Climashield HL (a good bit of it)
    • 3/4" Grosgrain
    • 1.1oz Ripstop Nylon

Looking good! My very first DIY project was a Climashield quilt for two. My wife & I were tent campers at the time. I still have the quilt. I can't wait to see your future projects now that you've been bitten by the bug

I think you'll find that 5oz Climashield warmer than you think. Most people report ~30F* comfort rating from a single layer of 5oz Apex. The craftsmanship looks good. You definitely have more free time than I do.

@MAD777 & DivaB Thanks! yes... ha I started off just making a few stuff sacks which im quickly finding is the seed which turns into a DIY addiction. Looking forward to testing it out over the next few weeks.

@AaronAlso Thanks as well! and for the bit on the temp rating. I wish Ohio weather would be its normal unpredictable self and give us a cold snap so I can at least test it somewhat. However I'm sure I'll have to wait till fall for any real testing. Haha I wish I had more free time myself! The topquilt actually only took me an hour and a half, and the pillow ~30 min. I got up and running fast once the girlfriend showed me how to use a sewing machine.

Yeah, that 5oz apex is warm Fluffy stuff. I think it'll be good to 30 pretty easily.

What are the dimensions on this? Is it just rectangular or is there a taper to it? Did you do any quilting to stabilize the CS?

I like the all black look.

What are the dimensions and the quilt's weight?

    Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys. I'm excited to test it out. The rough finished dimensions are:

47" W x 68" L I'm 6'2" and it comes up to my neck. The finished weight minus stuff sack (which will be ripstop nylon) same material is: 22.8oz or 646 grams

I'm overall very happy with how it turned out. Look, warmth and weight. @Merganser in response to your comment. No taper, just a straight up rectangle with a channel for the footbox and snaps to hold the foot box in place. But it can be uncinched and unsnapped into a rectangular quilt. As for the quilting. It's obviously sewn in on all four sides but in addition i just ran a 6-8" sew through baffle at the foot end and at the head end. It seems to hold together just fine. But i may go back and sew in a few more baffles just to ensure nothing shifts around in side on me.

Some quilting loops would also do the trick and would not compress the insulation like a sewn through baffle. As I understand it the only reason you need to quilt CS is to protect it from the stress of stuffing. I've made a couple CS under quilts and I've used loops with good success.

From what I understand, Apex doesn't need any quilting. Most everyone I've talked to just sews the Apex into the 4 edge seams. Quilting the Apex will compress it enough that you run the risk of having cold spots.
