Out On Loch an Daimh (pic heavy)

Went for a paddle on Loch an Daimh to one of the wee islands to see if it was possible to camp there.

    View from the dam

    Ready for the off

    Views from the canoe

Wife paddled as I took photos

    Found a spot to land

    Had an explore

Was a great day out and found a few good spots for a camp out.

Wow, what great, great pictures!!! Just a gorgeous area!! Are trees that sparse there??? Living in Ohio, I'm not used to seeing views with so little trees.

    hi 'shaman',

Had to have a wee look - hammocks and canoes - perfect combination! Also had to try and find out which Loch an Daimh you went to - I can find about 6 or 7 listed, but it looks like it's the one near Glen Lyon?

I've never been out there, so it's nice to see it 'from the ground' so to speak.

Not going to pinch Shaman's thread, I'm sure he can answer fully himself, but there's lots of the Highlands can look like that - quite bare hills. The theory goes we once had a primeval forest covering most of Scotland, but people, industry, shipbuidling, farming etc put paid to that. Then when that kind of died down, we had overgrazing with sheep and deer - and that's still the situation more or less. We have lots of plantation forestry, and a good bit less by way of native woodland. Some part of the country - away up in the very north west of the mainland will have even fewer trees!

I can't quote lubbockhammockguy now, but i reckon the fallen tree in the video is to the western end of the island shaman landed on. Soils here can be pretty thin (sometimes it feels like not much has changed since the ice age!)and it's quite common for trees on the exposed edges of plantation blocks to get blown down.

We've had some fabulous weather these last few days though, and it's been great to get out and about. Midgies are just getting warmed up though!

    Cheers
