    Continuing to play with pads

Received my gossamer gear wide 1/4" pad and cut it to the shape I wanted. Slept out with pad on bottom and fleece sleeping bag opened up for top blanket. Temp mid 70's when I got in and dropped to 68, no wind. I was almost too warm when I first got in and didn't use the fleece. Pulled the fleece over me sometime in the early morning, but was comfortably warm underneath. Last night, same conditions but tried with the fleece bag only. Started the night laying in the fleece bag with the top thrown to the side. Again, pulled the fleece over me sometime in the early morning. This time was chilly underneath about 3:30 but just mildly uncomfortable and not too chilly to go back to sleep. Tonight I'm going to try sleeping in the fleece bag again with just a left over piece of the gg pad under my shoulders.

Fiddleback uses pads exclusively, and is a good source of info. Here is a post of his that addresses this somewhat.

There's so much more than a pad when it comes to hammock sleep systems. For example, I don't use sleeping bags and only once used a top cover (transparency: the 'top cover' was a sleeping bag used as a quilt ). Instead I rely on cold weather clothing as the major part of my system. I suspect that the jacket and insulated pants I use provide about the same, maybe a little less, bottom insulation that a sleeping bag would. That's a long disclaimer to get to jnelson871's question above...

I use a ¼" Oware pad which by my reading is pretty much the same as a Gossamer wide. In a backyard experiement I felt cold coming through at the shoulders at 22°. I have no doubt if I incorporated my sit pad (a 4oz piece of WalMart blue foam) I would have been good into the mid- or low-teens. To be clear, the cold I felt wasn't horrible cold and would have been tolerated well on the trail. It was simply 'noticeable' and gave me a temperature marker to judge the cold capability of my system.

I'm a great believer in such pads and have never moved on to anything else. At $20-something and 7oz, I think they provide great insulation and bang for the bucks and weight.

Thanks FB. Currently using a 20 top quilt and insulated vest. I'll have to experiment with thermal pants.

    Oware Pads

Thanks for your foam pad information and the website you mentioned. I am new to hammock hanging am interested in the ecomonic savings pads provide over UQ's. If it works in Montana, it will certainly work for me in Florida. My only question is how do you keep the pad from slipping all around the hammock or you slipping off the pad as you sleep?

My gossamer gear pad is quite large and I trimmed it to better fit in the hammock. It isn't slippery and doesn't slide around. On a smaller pad I learned to kind of hold on to it as I turned onto my side.
