Yeah, I see what you're saying. I'm still curious to know if anyone has any experience making a cat cut along the ridgeline and if so, whether or not it made a difference in the tarp. I've made plenty of gear but am about to make my first fully DIY tarp for my hammock. I'm going to use the Winter Tarp design graciously posted by Scott, but am wondering if I should modify it with a cat cut. Any other thoughts or people out there with first-hand experience?

    Thanks!

Cat cut on the ridge has been tried before- what it does is reduce your head room when under it.

TH (see 2007, Warbonnet's tight as a drum tarp at Trail days)
my hammock gear weights total: 2430g (~86oz)
    Winter: total 2521 (~89oz)
(see my profile for detailed weights)

    gram counter, not gram weenie!

    Talking Finished !!

I just finished seam sealing my DIY fathers day tarp. I mostly followed the plans from the Hex Tarp Scott has on his web site (posted at the beginning of this thread).

I used a woodworkers trick for laying out the cat cuts; use a string to hold a thin strip of wood in curve.

While seam sealing I took photos of it with ridge line above tarp.

And ridge line below (how I plan to pitch)

I've been biting my lip, wringing my hands, and combing through posts looking for concise instruction before I take the scissors to my silnylon. THANK YOU for this! It's so helpful!

I too have been biting my body parts trying to figure a good precise way to do the Cat-cut.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Hey Scott,

I ordered my supplies for the winter tarp off of the material list in the pdf, however, while reading through the steps I noticed that I actually needed to order 4 more d-rings and probably 2 more feet of webbing because the side panel pulls are not included in that material list. Maybe this could be noted in the material list so others don't overlook that detail like I did? Those design sheets are awesome and I greatly appreciate you putting them together and making them available. I'm really looking forward to receiving my package and getting started to on this project.

thanks for all of the great ideas

I wish I had seen this post two weeks ago. I really could have used the woodworkers trick too. I went the tech way and then transferred distances from the worksheet to the fabric. OUCH......Like the say the smart man learns from his own mistakes, the wise man learns from the smart man. Some day I aspire to be smart.
