Slowhike described it spot-on.
Grizz is right about the time savings; they save seconds, not minutes. I never had much of a problem with them not holding, but I know exactly where each end of the tarp should be in relation to my suspension so centering isn't an issue for me. That happens when you set-up every day for a few weeks.

It doesn't sound to me like the figure 9's are what I'm looking for, but I'm not sure I'm picturing them just right. Is there a a picture of how you use them, Slowhike, (or anyone with a similar setup)?
That sounds like a good enough of an excuse to go set-up to me. I'll have pictures for you this evening.

Just wondering something... If the 9 is held by tension, would there be a danger of getting it stuck where you can't get it off??

No, that's not really a problem at all.

Note - the Fig 9's are available in the rope/cording section of many Home Depot stores.

Here are a couple of quickies. Tarp is still up let me know if you need other angles.
It's just one long piece of cord on each end of tarp with one end attached to tarp and the other open.
