    MySingle Layer Dual Mode Hammock

So I decided to make a dual mode bridge/speer type hammock from a single layer. I just got back from 3 days/37 miles in Mt. Rogers NRA, and it seemed to hold up nicely.

The suspension lines are 2.8 spyderline. The spreader bars are from quest outfitters. They attach via some PVC pipe end caps that are screwed into the fabric through short pieces of webbing. This also serves to keep the fabric from bunching in the middle (a problem with cord as the suspension lines). The fabric is 1.9 untreated ripstop from the $1.00 Wally World bin. The design required no fabric cuts (except for the bugnet). It has an internal ridgeline, mostly for hanging stuff. It can be changed from bridge mode to banana mode in about 60 seconds, and if hung right, doesn't require a change in the suspension from hammock to trees. I used a 10X11 JRB tarp for coverage, and JRB quilts under and over to stay nice and toasty. I attached some pics.

Wow Great idea. I really like that.

What is the overall length of the material?

The material is about 12 feet. That is a little longer than the typical hammock (i think i've used 10 feet on others), but it gives plenty of room for both modes, and makes for a very comfortable lay in the banana speer mode. I think the fabric was 60 inches wide before any hemming etc.

    That's really cool.

Can you show a little more about how you made it (what kind of pvc, etc.)?

I have a friend that has been asking me to make him something very similar to this. If you wouldn't mind posting some sort of instructions, I'd really appreciate it.

I'll post some pics of the construction methods tonight when I get home. All the photos are on my home computer. This turned out to be very simple to construct. I was a bit worried it might not hold up because of the single layer, but after spending a few nights in it, plus hanging around in the back yard, it looks strong. I don't see any signs of stress on the fabric.

Another added bonus is that the spreader bars fit perfectly into the removeable internal frame slots on my backpack, so i really don't have any additional weight from them. I'll check overall weight tonight, but I think it is less than 3 lbs, which includes all hardware to hang.

    That is a cool hammock.
You know with a yellow hammock you are bound to get a couple of banana jokes.

I think i heard them all the last few days on the Trail. I was with a group of 16-18 year-olds. My preferred name is the "golden gate bridge" hammock, but you can imagine other not-so-innocent names . . . .

Jazilla made a yellow tarp. If you could get the two together you'd have quite the collection...

The spreader bars are from quest outfitters.

Which poles from Quest did you use?
