    California State Parks

Decided to ask CA State Parks about regs on Hammock Camping, thought I'd post the reply:

    Hello,

    Thank you for your email.

Ropes, lines, swings or hammocks may not be fastened to any plant, fence or park structure. Attach lines to your own property only.

Thank you for your interest in California State Parks.

    Best Regards,

Tried reading through all the regulations, notices and brochures but could find no reference to regulating the use of hammocks. Can you please provide any information regarding that topic?

I just hung at Henry W. Coe and had no issues. I talked to a Ranger who had no problem with my set up.

To be honest, the parks are so understaffed that you probably won't even get hassled.

I did a cycling tour late October/early November last year from Eugene, Or to San Francisco. I met a guy 2 days into my trip that I ended up doing the whole tour with. Even though we both had tents he hung his ENO at almost every single Hiker/Biker site we went to. We never had a problem.

After that trip I decided for cycle touring I'm going 100% hammock and leaving the tent behind.

I can't say for certain but you might have issues south of Santa Barbara though.

I think the key phrase is "may not be fastened" It sounds to me that they are talking about nails/screws or anything permanent.

Nice catch, Triggerhpy. Now we just have to find the actual regulation and see how it reads, but I'm not 'fastening' anything to other than my own property if I take the strap around a tree and attach it to itself.

I hate trying to understand regulations, always so confusing and too much gray area. "Fasten" can mean so many things. We need Bill Clinton to help and ask for clarification - sort of like the "It depends on what the meaning of the words 'is' is" (man that was classic, I miss that guy!) Anyway, sounds like a good situation to ask around and wait until you get then answer you want and print that sucker. If it's anything like Indiana, every single person in the state parks has an opinion but no real answers.

I usually hang at silverwood lake sp in San bernardino county and never had a problem and even ask if it was ok and they were fine with it as long as you weren't nailing things into the trees.

I think the best thing to do is call the camp ground and see what they say. I just called Castle Crag Stare Park and they said they can be used inside the camp site but not in the rest of the park.
