    Michigander and proud

Quigleyman here. I'm new to camping, newer to lightweight backpacking, and newest to hammocking....only got about three nights in one.

I own one hammock, a Grand Trunk Ultralight in camouflage. I love it. I got it mainly for the price, ($15 on amazon) cause I couldn't afford an ENO doublenest in olive/khaki. I use amazon microropes with toggles. (LOVE THEM) I have a green 9.5/12 chinook tarp. (again cause i couldn't afford what I wanted...silnylon $35 vs about $90) Homemade bug net.

I used to ground camp, so I have a blue ccf pad. Amazing pad...soo comfy for me both on the ground and elevated, but my problem with it in the hammock is sweat. I freeze at about 2am and never recover. I made a sweet reflectix pad....same problem. I don't want much to do with underquilts, at least till I get down to single digits. I NEED HELP WITH MY PAD SITUATION. (also have no money)

any suggestions for my pad problem are greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard and to the MI group. I would say you would be best with an under quilt. Wouldn't cost you much if you went with a synthetic or an old sleeping bag conversion.

Here's the problem....I pack in a hunting waist pack. I could care less about weight. I need compactness. I can rig pads on this setup pretty well, but UQs seem a little bulky. I tend to overpack, so I've found that if i focus on size that weight takes care of itself.

I'm testing a 1" self inflating pad right now. If that doesn't work for me, my next step is gonna be to skip the pad and try just sleeping on a wool or fleece blanket in the bottom of the hammock. I also have a gore tex bivvy I can throw into the mix, if necessary, but I'd prefer not to.
