3/4 UQ Overfill to boost 40°F down to 30°F

I have trolled around reading up on overfill.
Some say overfill works well to boost the rating, others say it will just make the quilts rating more solid in wind etc.

My end goal is a 30°F very light, 3/4 UQ. (I have a 20°F UQ with overfill for colder weather)

We shall say the start point is a 3/4" UQ with 1" baffles, 4oz 900 fill down. Temp rating of 40°F.

If I wanted a rating of 30°F would adding a further 2-3oz 900 fill get me there comfortably.

    OR\

Should I increase the baffle height to 1.5" and still use the 2-3oz extra down (6-7oz total fill)

My thoughts would be the increase in baffle height to 1.5" would be the better option compared to just overfilling the 1" baffles as it should allow that down to loft further, hence warmer.

    Thought's, Comments

If down works partially compressed, then there is a coefficient in the equation for insulating value for the quantity of down as well as a coefficient for loft.

I double-checked your post to confirm that you ARE talking about an underquilt. So, the major things that stand out are that you will probably not compromise drape with more down. That compromise and resulting drafts from absence of seal is plenty of reason not to over-fill a top quilt. Second, you don't have to worry about the denser down trapping water vapor since vapor is lighter than air.

A further thought is to see just what the saving in weight is of not having droopier baffles by comparing unstuffed weights from a few makers. Or do the calculation of say 7 (baffles) x 4(ft x 1 (inch) = 2 1/3 sq ft of baffling, about 1/4 yd = 1/4 oz?

Not much, but I can see wanting to do it because space between the dirt and the UQ isn't that great.
