I'm coming in late to this party, but have to join with others in stating that camping in the park itself is completely safe for families. We've spent MANY nights there and have no complaints other than the rising fees for the campsites. For the cost of the sites I'm more than willing to travel elsewhere for camping of equal quality.

The comments about laser show are correct, though. If you plan to stay for it, you may want to camp in the park that night. It takes FOREVER to get out unless you leave before the end of the show, it's already late by that time and it's no fun to travel elsewhere to a campsite that late.

    Best of luck to you.

I know this is an old thread, but my family and I are going over to Stone Mountain next week, taking the pop-up and the in-laws will be there in their RV's. I am planning on taking my hammock along for the opportunity to test my new quilts in some cold temps..looking like in the high 20's one night.

Anyone know if I will get fussed at for hanging my hammock there in the park? I saw one post here that said he hung his hammock, but just wanted to see if anyone knows of recent trips?

    Thanks

I've hung there a couple of times. Didn't know there was a rule, didn't ask, they didn't tell me nor bother me at all.

Thanks for the response, I am not sure if there is a rule, just saw it mentioned in this thread. Looking forward to testing some new quilts in the cold temps next week.

    Response from campground below..

You are more than welcome to hang your hammock as long as you are not damaging any trees. See you soon!

    Thank You,

I probably live closer to SMP than anyone who has commented, so far. I go there 6 days a week to run, hike, climb the mountain or just walk around the mountain. It's a nice place and safe. Georgia state parks are great too but SMP has lots of things for kids who get bored. Campground is nice, but a little pricey. I am a newbee hanger but I can speak to the reality of SMP. PM me if I can be any help.
