Redundancy! Why all the knives? A hatchet and a saw? I'd ditch the hand axe, too heavy.

Good list but do you need to bring all of those knives, hatchet, and a saw?

I'm a bit of an over prepared kind of guy... I understand the concerns and just a side note this trip is happening so i can work out my system... So yeah I have extra of this and that, and that adds weight but I'm working on it... And plus I like building fire and being that mesquite wood it the main tree around here it is hard and fills knife quick when making kindling...

Yep, a downed mesquite will dull a chainsaw, saw blade, or knife quickly. Up in the air, not so bad.

Where are you camping in S. Tex? I see youre taking dryer lint. What kind of fire igniter are you using? I have been playing with a Globspark firesteel. It seems to put out some serious sparks. Are you dry camping or somewhere near water?
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

Eh, as long as it's comfortable for you to carry for eight miles, you should be fine. I find that my worry about weight carried is directly proportional to how much terrain I have to cover, and how much elevation gain I have, in a day.

For me, 25 lbs? Yeah, I'm good. That's below my normal weekend weight, and I'm good for fifteen to twenty miles without issue at 30-ish pounds. For you? I dunno; never been you .

I do have two questions about the list, though.

I don't see any bottom insulation on there for sleeping in. Is that intentional? And, if so, have you tried to sleep in your hammock at the expected nighttime temperatures without bottom insulation before? If not, it may wind up being an uncomfortable night.

Second, I don't see a way to purify water short of boiling it. There are arguments both ways on that, and I don't know what the quality of the water at your intended hike is like. But it might be worth carrying either chemical treatment or a filter for the water if the sources are iffy.

Anyway, I hope your trip goes well!

too many knives. Small pocket stone solves the edge problem. Bit of wet or dry sandpaper glued to a bit of paint stick weighs even less. ;-)

If that's 25 lbs, then my kit is fine as is.

NP with the firearms in S. Tex. Barely evens the playing field.

Looks like the knives and stuff are part of your fun, so go for it.
I was wondering what the "Green sheet for cover" is and also what type of pack you were using.
