My wife and I just got back from a trip out west to visit family and a prospective grad school, and I managed to weasel in a couple nights of hanging
The first hang was in the Mt. Evans wilderness near Idaho Springs, CO. It was chilly that night at 9,500 feet; not sure the exact temp, but certainly below freezing. We both stayed comfortable enough in our DIY gear, but not toasty. I think it was just an adjustment issue.
The landscape is breathtaking out there (and the roads frightening to a flatlander!)
Here's our setup in the pines. We had a creek running nearby and no neighbors, so it was awesome.
From there we went to the desert near Grand Junction, CO, but didn't camp so I'll only include a couple pics.
I found a collared lizard!
Then we moved on to Flagstaff, AZ via the San Juan skyway, which was a beautiful drive.
I had my meeting at NAU, then met up with Dejoha, who is an awesome guy and was kind enough to give us a private tour of the university in a bike carriage kind of thing, as well as maps of good local hanging spots. Many thanks Dejoha!
We ended up camping by a (dry) lake bed because we were late getting out and it was already dark. That night was great, with temps in the 40's. Here's our setup there:
and the view from our hammocks.
It was a great trip. Crazy big wilderness out west, something we Illinoisans can only dream about.
Hope you enjoyed the report, I'm always happy to clog up your bandwidth
