    WTB: Fishing Setup/Kit

I'm by no means any sort of fisherman, but I'd like to pick up a fishing kit to go fishing while I'm on an extended hike. Doing some very basic reading, it looks like Tenkara is the way to go, but that may be a little out of my price range for the initial plunge into this. Still, I'm open to suggestions.

I really would like to buy a complete kit rather than piece things together, if possible.

A tenkara setup would be what I would suggest and overall shouldn't too expensive. The weight and compact size are well worth it overall. I'm saying this from having made the plunge to tenkara not long ago and having great experiences since then.

I went this route due to size/weight. But like hammocks fishing is a personal experience as well so do what feels right to you.

Not to many kits out there that include tackle systems. Kits start at about $35 with a rod and reel. Walmart might carry a complete Fly Fishing setup for $70, but you'll want to toss the fly reel and low quality flies and the rod will not be conducive to hiking. In the long run it may be worth while to invest in an entry level Tenkara setup.

    I know a guy

Give me a call Corncob, I have some stuff I am working on clearing out of both the shop and my personal pile and could probably hook you up with a good starter Tenkara kit.

pgibson is great to deal with. I definitely suggest talking with him about a starter setup.

    Greetings

Last year, Bablefish5 posted a video on his ultralight fishing kit.

Check out emmrods and pennfishingrods. I own both and have great luck with each. They fill very different roles, though. I could pull stumps with my emmrod, but the penrod is a superultralight rod (I have pulled in 4lb channel cats on one). Both available in fly setups as well.

Digging through my rods this summer, I found that I had a hidden little gem tucked in with my stuff. I have a Swede Stainless Stik that I'd picked up years and years ago for fishing from a float tube with.

Gonna replace the lousy reel that came with it and tuck it in with my Osprey.

You might consider looking for something like this on ebay as well.
