I carry Tit stakes, but given the conditions I will try and use something else for some experience.

I am sure there will be a day I will forget my stakes, and actually need them, and hopefully I will be better at not using stakes.

I haven't had luck with placing heavy items on my lines, either the pressure point between it and the earth are off and it doesn't always hold. That and if it is something that looks like a seat people take it away from me to sit on

Roots and sticks work, and bushes/branches are great line tensioners too.

When I finally crawl into camp the last thing I am going to do is scout around for some way to guy out my rain fly. I gladly suffer the odd ounces of a few ground hogs, in return for the ease of getting my "house" set up.

Never know, maybe those odd extra ounces are what's causing you to crawl into camp tired

I don't even have stakes! I always seem to find some good sized rocks that work as stakes!

I use stakes for the same reason I use a SRL in my hammock. Maybe they aren't necessary but I like to be able to set up the same way, quickly, every time. 6 MSR groundhogs do the trick just fine. I have my tarp lines attached to 4 them permanently, and 2 "naked" ones to stake out the blackbird. I also use figure 9 biners on the corners. The biners, stakes/lines go into my stake bag and the tarp goes into the snake skin . Is it the lightest way to go? Absolutely not. But its very quick and convenient.

I've been trying to cut down on stakes but I recognize that they are convenient. If I am expecting a rainy trip, I'll bring a full complement of stakes because I just don't want to bother whittling stakes in the rain.

Otherwise, I bring one snow stake which is also my potty trowel and one other stake to use as a "pilot hole" in case I encounter hard ground.

With the dry weather we've been having, I've been leaving the MSR groundhogs at home and using cut off half size gutter spikes. I can mash them into hard ground with my foot without the slightest chance of bending them, their size gives them good holding ability and they're only 7gm/each which is half the weight of a MSR groundhog and gettin in the neighborhood of a ti stake.

I quit taking stakes. We live in a land covered in rocks and sticks. Both work adequately. Also, I got tired of loosing them. I carry two stakes that are a necessary part of my cook kit.
If I lose 12 more ounces in this pack and gear I can bring one more beer.
