Whoopie sling beads

I tried something today since I did not have any beads laying around for the loop side of a whoopie sling I was making. I buried a 2 inch long tapered piece of Amstel right next to where the loop enters the constrictor. I figure if a back splice works on the other end of the loop to stop the tail from entering the constrictor why not this side. I think it looks cleaner than a bead too.

Has this been done?
Is there a problem with this method that I should be aware of?

It's been done before. I did it on a couple of whoopies I made. It works fine but the problem is the manufacturer recommends a more gradual change in diametre. That is why they recommend tapering the buries. The more sudden change in diametre can pose a potential problem. For hammock applications it might not be a big deal but I undid mine so as not to risk it.

If your looking for something to prevent a back splice on your adjustable loop, I have used one of those split rings used for key chains. I had a bunch on hand already and they weigh very little.

There are a few methods used by people here other than the bead. Some have taken the strands out of a piece of paracord and threaded the amsteel line through that.

Sure has. I've been using (and posting about) this method since I got the idea from harrell79cj5 in this thread. See my post #32 on page 4. While the photos show an un-tapered piece being buried, I do cut the ends at an angle now to make a slight taper. I'm not worried about this "below spec" taper because the load is split between the two legs of the adjustable loop providing plenty of safety factor.

All of my whoopies have been made this way with zero problems in the last 14 months and I highly recommend it.

That is a good thread. I had not seen that one. There are a few other good ideas on there like tying your toggle to the whoopie.

I did actually taper both ends of the bury so hopefully not much degradation in strength.
