I cut apart an old broken trekking pole and it works just fine. You can also just use sticks you find on the ground, if the right thickness.
Go to your local Archery shop. when they cut aluminum arrows they have pcs. left over. you can use them.

Like Firemedic says. I got some carbonfiber cutoffs for free (that's arrows not daisy-dukes.)
I attached them to the whoopie sling by tying a prussic knot in a locked loop with a tail. I threaded the tail through a hole I drilled in the side of the arrow shaft and tied a knot in it. Then I sealed all the cut ends with a little fingernail polish to keep splinters from peeling off.
