1/4 hy density foam

I just the 1/4 hy density foam 27 X 60 pad I got off Ebay today. I will try it out tonight and let you know. Shipping was more than the Pad cost. 28 for the two pads shipped. I hope it works okay

Here is the same stuff I bought. I have slept on it one night and it felt pretty good. Seemed to stay in place. I have not weighed it yet but both pieces shipped at a pound.

Interesting. I bought some similar stuff at Home Depot. But, it's 2-3 mm thick. Superlight! It's used for floating floor underlayment. It's similar in feel to craft foam. I made my own multimat by applying adhesive and ripstop on one side of the foam. It stays in place, and allows me to twist and turn while laying on the ripstop side. Also, made some ultralight camp sandals with the scraps.

I just looked over the website reviews, and several folks complained that it tore easily. Does the adhered ripstop reinforce it enough to avoid that?

I saw that review, as well. The foam can tear pretty easily, on it's own. It's quite thin. The adhered ripstop definitely helps. The sandals will only work with the nylon. Otherwise, the laces tear right out. Even then, I wouldn't call them "durable". They're just meant for getting out of sweaty shoes and hangin around the campsite.
As to the multimat functionality, If I had all my weight on it and tried to grab the foam, I could probably easily tear it off of the nylon. My mat has only had a backyard test, so far. What I'm working on, now, is a ripstop pad sock. Basically, something to hold multiple layers of foam, so I can adjust the thickness and add wings.
I'll take some pics. However, as these are prototypes, they're ugly. Sharpie markings, and stuff like that.

I'm interested in this. How is the foam holding up? What did you end up with for the final shape/design? What do you think will be your lowest comfortable temperature, using an under quilt or sleeping bag?

My homemade multi mat is working well. Took me down to 40 degrees up in the sierras a couple weeks ago. Just my Byer hammock, diy m-mat and a Golite down vario bag.
The sandals, not so good. The foam pretty much crushed flat under my heels. I spent alot of time trying to make a sock for some pads. That didn't really work out because of a poor design.
So, I guess I'd say I'm still in the design phase. I don't think I'd recommend this foam based on the "crushabilty" experienced with the sandals. But, I have a ton of it. So, I'll just keep playing with it.
